Kingston Council will have to pay a share of a waste budget overspend of more than £7,000.

The south London waste partnership – comprising Sutton, Merton, Kingston and Croydon councils – exceeded its £887,000 budget for reasons including a delay in closing a contract, according to Kingston Council papers.

Greater demand for contract management work cost about £68,000 more than expected, but the partnership saved £143,000 on its communications bill, and £25,000 on legal costs.

Kingston Council will pay £1,802 towards the overspend.

The partnership was created in 2003 as a way for all four councils to save money on rubbish disposal, and mitigate their impact on the environment.

The budget report will be discussed at a meeting of the partnership’s joint committee next Tuesday, June 18, at Kingston Guildhall from 5.30pm.
