A Croydon theatre group is to be honoured by the Queen.

Younger Generation Theatre Group is one of 117 groups of outstanding volunteers to have been awarded the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service.

The award aims to recognise the outstanding contributions made to local communities by groups of volunteers and has an equivalent status for a voluntary group as the MBE (Member of the British Empire) has for an individual.

As part of the honour the group, who are celebrating their 25th year, were invited to the Queen's garden party at Buckingham Palace last year.

The group who rehearse at St Mark's Church Hall in Purley give young people the chance to appear on stage in a professional environment.

They will be presented with their award later this year.
