Sutton & Cheam Swimming Club secured fantastic results at the final weekend of the London Region Age Group Championships at Crystal Palace.

William Ward, 13, was on the podium after all four of his events winning silver medals in the 100m breaststroke and 200m individual medley, as well as bronze medals in the 400m individual medley and 100m backstroke.

Nathan Eves, 14, won silver in the gruelling 1,500m freestyle event and just missed a bronze medal in the 200m freestyle event by only two-tenths of a second.

In total the club made it into 13 finals over the weekend with April Hedges, 12, placing sixth in the 100m backstroke; Joseph Lenihan, 11, sixth in the 100m backstroke; Kieran Rutter, 12, eighth in the 100m backstroke; Michael Rees, 13, fifth in the 100m breaststroke, sixth in the 200m individual medley and 100m backstroke; and Tomas Gibson, 12, sixth in the 200m freestyle.

Also making the coaches proud were Natalie Andrew, 14, in the 200m and 800m freestyle events, Lois Martin, 13, in the 100m backstroke and 14-year-old Alexander Wimbush in the 200m freestyle.

Overall at the Championship, the club won 10 medals and 27 top eight finishes, and is now looking forward to the National Championships in July where five swimmers have qualified to compete.

Also over the weekend, the club’s masters were competing at the Surrey County Championships at Surrey Sports Park with great success.

Alec Eves, the masters coach, won gold in the 50m breaststroke, bronze in the 50m butterfly and fourth places in the 25m butterfly, 100m individual medley and 50m freestyle events in the 40 to 44 age group.

Sophie Taylor completed set of medals with gold in the 25m breaststroke, silver in the 100m breaststroke and bronze in the 50m breaststroke events in the 18 to 24 age group, and Steve Moorhouse won gold in the 50m breaststroke, silver in the 50m freestyle and was fourth place in the 100m freestyle event in the 25 to 29 age group.
