The tiniest museum in Mitcham celebrated its 30th anniversary this weekend.

The Wandle Industrial Museum is located on the Lower Green in a small building next to Vestry Hall and is run entirely by volunteers.

Its 30th anniversary was marked on Saturday, June 15, with a visit from the deputy Mayor of Merton, Councillor John Sargeant.

Meg Thomas, who has volunteered at the museum for some 20 years, said: "We look at the industrial industries that were once based along the Wandle River.

"There were quite a few and quite important ones including Williams Morris, Arthur Liberty and Connolly Leather who produced the best leather in the world, some of which is still in the House of Commons and in Rolls Royce’s.

"For a little river in south London it had quite an important links with the world."

The museum is open for visitors on Wednesday from 1 to 4pm and on Sunday from 2 to 5pm.

New volunteers are always welcome.
