A 22-year-old man has been jailed after running over a policeman on a stolen moped.

Oshane McIntosh of Valley Road, Lambeth, was sentenced to 42 months in prison for GBH and a three-year driving ban at Inner London Crown Court on Wednesday June 12.

McIntosh rode at speed at Sutton police inspector Stuart Hinks who was taking part in an operation in Norwood Road, West Norwood, in the early hours on Saturday March 3, 2012.

Insp Hinks, who was taking part in an operation combating gang on gang crime and robbery, suffered a broken ankle in the collision and still suffers from ligament damage.

That morning police had noticed a black moped, driven by McIntosh, without a number plate.

Officers attempted to catch up with the moped and followed him in to Probyn Road where Insp Hinks positioned himself in the road and indicated to the rider to stop.

Despite having plenty of time to halt or change direction McIntosh carried on towards Insp Hinks and smashed into him before they both fell to the floor.

McIntosh tried to make off on foot but was detained after a short pursuit.

Checks soon revealed the moped had been stolen nearby – just hours before the collision.

McIntosh was charged with GBH, receiving stolen goods, failing to stop for police, driving not in accordance with licence and driving without insurance.

Detective Constable Pete Brewster, of the Met at Lambeth, said: “I am delighted with the court's verdict. McIntosh showed a complete disregard for Inspector Hinks’ safety and he was fortunate not to suffer even more serious injury.

“He, nor any other officer, should have to face such levels of aggression whilst going about their duty.”

Inspector Hinks has recently retired from his duties in Sutton after serving the Metropolitan police for 33 years.
