Disabled swimmers took silver at the London Youth Games last week.

The Sutton boys’ disability swimming team were the pride of the borough at the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games at Beckenham Spa on Thursday June 13.

In front of Paralympic swimming gold medallist Elaine Barrett, more than 150 competitors from 21 boroughs took to the blocks at the Bromley venue.

Sutton was going into the boys’ competition as defending champions having won in three of the last four years.

There were three gold medals for Sutton swimmers in the boys’ competition with David Rudolph winning the functional classification of the 25m backstroke.

There was also gold for Isaac Tidy (15, Sutton Grammar) in the 50m backstroke and Luke Mills (17, Stanley Park) in the 50m freestyle both in the learning disability and hearing impairment classification.

Sutton girls’ team finished joint fifth though there was gold for Frankie Evans (15, The Linl Secondary) in the learning disability and hearing impairment classification of the 50m backstroke.

Sutton team manager Bev Rand, said: "I’m really happy as we usually do well at this event. Would have liked a gold but I’m happy because for some it was their first event while for others they had been here before and it was their last year.

"It means an awful lot to them to be involved in what feels like quite a high profile event for them and they really enjoy it because it feels like quite a fun event too."

The 2013 London Youth Games will be the biggest in history featuring 85 competitions across 33 sports and 27 event day.
