Police have confirmed plans to close all but one of their current front counters in Croydon.

Under new proposals by the Mayor’s Office of Policing and Crime, Croydon Police station will be the only 24 hour front counter in the borough.

The new custody centre in Windmill Road will become a standard front counter which will be open to the public during the day.

South Norwood Police Station will not operate as a front counter when the changes are introduced in September and will close.

There will also be various contact points in Norbury, Thornton Heath, New Addington, Purley, Gypsy Hill, Addington. They will be open for a minimum of three hours per week.

Other Safer Neighbourhood Bases are based in Coulsdon, Addiscombe, Shirley, Selsdon, Crystal Palace and the town Centre.

Once the changes are rolled out, it is expected Kenley, Norbury and South Norwood Police stations will close for good.

The first 10 of 117 new officers promised to Croydon as part of the plans arrived on the borough last month as a greater emphasis is put on neighbourhood policing.

MOPAC originally announced the changes in January as they look to save £500m in police funding.

The Deputy Mayor for Policing Stephen Greenhalgh said: “After the most extensive public consultation ever carried out into policing in London, we have listened to what people want in putting ‘bobbies’ before buildings.

“Moving 2,600 extra police officers into neighbourhoods provides a golden opportunity for the Met to reconnect with Londoners.”
