Vulnerable people in Surrey will be handed a pocket-sized speedometer which uses GPS to stop them getting lost.

People with dementia and learning difficulties will get the gadget to help relatives find them when they get on buses or trains in a confused state.

When the vehicle reaches a pre-set speed limit, the device texts a loved one and includes a link to a map which shows their exact location and the speed they are travelling at.

Mel Few, Surrey County Council’s cabinet member for adult social care, said: “We’re already testing a tracker watch to help keep vulnerable people safe and this pocket-sized device will give relatives reassurance that people with dementia or learning difficulties don’t end up lost because they got into a confused state and took a trip on a train or bus.”

The device also allows a safe area to be set and if the user strays beyond it, an alert is triggered.
