South Norwood police station has formally been put up for sale, Croydon police have confirmed.

The station in Oliver Grove which housed CID, uniformed officers, the safer neighbourhood team and response teams, was the borough's only other 24-hour front counter apart from Croydon police station.

Last September the Mayor's office agreed the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) could sell off the station as it seeks to save millions of pounds from its budget.

The front counter facility at South Norwood currently remains open to the public, but changes to the opening hours and availability of front counter services will be implemented over the summer.

Kenley and Norbury police stations will also close over the summer, with both stations expected to be put up for sale later this year.

The MPS say the station closures will not impact on local policing as Croydon will benefit from 117 additional officers bringing the borough's police numbers to 740, under plans introduced by the London Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC).

Croydon Borough Commander, Chief Superintendent David Musker described the three buildings as out-of-date and said they were expensive to run and not fit for purpose.

He said: "We will be changing the way we operate here in Croydon in the autumn under the Local Policing Model and these operational changes will mean we are able to deliver a better service for Croydon's communities.

"I want to reassure the public the closure of these stations will not mean a drop in service. We will have deployment bases in the north, centre and south of the borough and we have a recently-opened custody facility in Windmill Road, which will enable us to deliver quality policing across Croydon."
