A troubled dump is expected to remain open for the rest of the week, although its long term future is unclear.

The Kimpton Park Way Reuse and Recycling Centre's future is in doubt after it emerged the company that runs it on behalf of Sutton Council, contractor Environmental Waste Control (EWC), is in financial difficulties.

The firm is believed to be in crisis talks with banks and it is unclear whether it will continue to operate the site, or the five others it runs on behalf of Croydon, Kingston, and Merton Councils through the South London Waste Partnership.

EWC is believed to have run into trouble last week and there were fears the Kimpton Park Way site and others around South London could close over the weekend.

But a Sutton Council spokesman said the plant remained open over the weekend and is expected to stay open for the rest of the week but did not comment on the longer-term future of the site. EWC has declined to comment.

EWC took over the running of the dump in 2009 from contractor SITA.

Sutton Council ran the site before Sita and it is believed the council could take over the management on a temporary basis if EWC is unable to continue.
