I read with dismay your article quoting Councillor Neil Dallen who stated "It is inevitable that, in years to come, most of Epsom will be residential parking, but we are the only town in Surrey that does not have it. We want it to be done little by little, to see what happens."
So the truth is out now. Against resident's wishes they try and sneak the scheme in piecemeal, road by road, concentrating first on a couple of roads were there are issues, eventually making it Epsom-wide. Councillors know that once they get the zones in place they can keep expanding them as the parking problem naturally moves to another area.
The only reason councillors want them is because, as illustrated in other councils, they generate millions of pounds in revenue!
Residents only have to look at other nearby areas such as Woking where Surrey County Council put the resident permit charges up by 500% in 2010.
And Merton Council changed their scheme to also operate on a Saturday. It's all about generating as much revenue for the council as possible and not about what residents want.
Councillors should remember that the majority of Epsom residents twice voted against resident parking schemes and that they are there to serve the majority.
