A woman from Claygate has designed the central feature for the Plant Heritage Marquee at this year’s Hampton Court Flower Show.

Selina Botham, who won the gold award for best small garden at the show in 2008, studied garden design at Guildford College’s Merrist Wood campus.

Plant Heritage is also celebrating its 35th anniversary this year and the theme for the celebratory display is “the protective shape of a crown, with precious gems in the form of plants”.

Mrs Botham, however, will not be making the display alone.

Ella Fielding, 27, from Esher, is a chainsaw artist and will make the two-metre high “35” sculpture look as though it is coming out of the Oak tree trunk that they are using.

Mrs Botham said: “It’s been great collaborating with Ella as she has brought to life the initial ideas I had in a very fresh and exciting way.

“Ella designed and carved the central sculpture and created the surrounding crown framework.”

National Collection holders at Plant Heritage have also given the pair advice about the best flowers to use in the display.

Mrs Botham added: “They have been the real ‘jewels’ of this project.”

Hampton Court Flower Show runs from July 9 to 15. Mrs Botham and Miss Fielding will be at the show every day, and will be available to answer questions about the exhibit from 11am to noon.
