A Sutton zookeeper is set to star alongside a camel in a new documentary.

North Cheam woman Angela Ryan is a head zookeeper at London Zoo and will feature in the first episode of ITV documentary The Zoo next week.

Viewers will see the 33-year-old former St Philomena's High School pupil get stuck-in while training haughty camels Genghis and Noemie and learn how a bit of sweet talking can go a long way when training a giant animal.

Ms Ryan developed a love of animals while at school and volunteered at the Wandle Valley Wildlife Hospital in Wallington. She also had a Saturday job at Pets World in Carshalton Beeches.

She said: "Volunteering at Wandle Valley Wildlife Hospital cemented my passion for animals and I am so proud to be in charge of our children’s zoo and animal demonstrations at London Zoo.

"Having the documentary crew took some getting used to – especially when coupled with training a new 650kg camel - but I’m glad people who watch the series will be able to share a little bit of what is probably the best job in the world."

Ms Ryan has worked at ZSL London Zoo for 10 years and manages a large team of keepers. She is responsible for the Children's Zoo and Animal Adventure as well as the zoo's demonstrations, including one featuring deadly birds.

The show will be aired on ITV1 at 8pm on Wednesday, July 10.
