Wandsworth Council is calling on parks and common users to ensure they take their rubbish with them after record amounts of litter were dumped over the past two weekends.

On average, around 45 tonnes of rubbish has to be picked up from parks and commons every month - mainly food and drink packaging.

But with the current heatwave in full swing, July’s figures are set to rocket after huge numbers of people visited the borough’s greenspaces.

Significant numbers are leaving litter behind, mainly food packaging and drinks containers.

Now the council is urging all park visitors to take their rubbish home with them and make sure they don’t spoil the park’s appearance for other people.

The annual clean-up costs local council tax payers more than £400,000.
