A Cobham charity has received a £2,000 donation as part of a programme to raise awareness about charities to young people.

Oasis Childcare, a charity which works with vulnerable parents and children, was handed the money as part of the MTG Youth for Charity initiative, which will give out £20,000 to charities over the next two years.

After studying the Cobham charity through in-depth research and analysing how it could be supported, students from Tormead School, Guildford, nominated Oasis Childcare for some of the cash.

The nomination was successful after judges were impressed by the range of help the charity gives families where the children’s circumstances is often symptomatic of years of unresolved issues for the parents and family unit.

Pupils chose to nominate the charity after learning about its struggle for funding which threatened its closure.

Caroline Edwards from Oasis Childcare said: “We are so pleased that Oasis is one of the charities that MTG Youth for Charity has chosen to support and it makes it even more special that they were introduced to us by inspiring children from our local community.”

The money given to Oasis Childcare will go towards a 12-week programme called Fun Friends, which will help four to 16 year olds learn skills and techniques to cope with anxiety.

The programme will increase emotional resilience and promote positive coping skills before more serious emotional difficulties occur later in life.

Derek Austin from Mackrell Turner Garrett said: “We are delighted to have been able to award Oasis Childcare with a £2,000 donation, not only as a result of the excellent support it offers to vulnerable parents and children, but also due to the breadth and scope of interest the pupils of Tormead School demonstrated in wanting to help others.

“It exemplifies what young people and the wider community can do to make a real difference to the world around them, a philosophy which is at the heart of MTG Youth for Charity.”

The initiative, now in its second year, is welcoming nominations from schools, youth organisations and charities that work with young people across the county.
