Following the recent article in your paper re. the proposed [McDonald's] drive-through in Wallington, I would like to tell you of my objection to this for the following reasons:

  • We do not need another fast food store in Wallington - there are plenty already
  • We do not want to encourage a culture of fast food stores which will impact in out local health services in the long run
  • We wish to raise the profile of Wallington within the London Borough of Sutton for the right reasons, not just to fill the space for a fast fix
  • We do not want more traffic along Stafford Road and the surrounding streets - as tax payers to the borough we will end up footing the bill for that
  • We do not want more air pollution and noise.
  • We do not want congregations of large numbers of people around the area at various times - day and night
  • The drive-through will attract not only more people but the school children will congregate there.

Youngsters already congregate in Wallington High Street after school - I have seen there is already a need for police presence in the afternoons. The new proposal may mean either a shift in the police presence or the need to increase the presence in the High Street and Stafford Road - again, this will impact local people for monies to fund this.

We want to promote a positive, welcoming environment/area. We want to upgrade our environment, not bring it down. The restaurant opposite has brought, not only a welcoming environment, but has improved the look of the street with plants. We want to improve the look of Stafford Road and it's already overstocked fast food culture. We want to be able to manage the current busy environment. We want to show the new generation that we have an interest in their well-being and food health.

To the borough - spend the £100,000 in a positive way to upgrade the area around Stafford Road/borough. It would be all too easy to say yes to McDonald's, but let them find an industrial setting where the look will be more in keeping with suitable parking.
