The sustained contributions of a trio of community-spirited individuals have been celebrated at a new awards scheme run by a church and residents.

St Mary’s Church, in Cuddington, presented its first citizen-centred community awards on Sunday, July 14, in partnership with the Cuddington Residents’ Association (RA).

The awards were attended by MP Chris Grayling and the 2nd Cuddington scouts and guides.

Reverend Andy Cain, vicar of St Mary's, said: "The event was brilliant, with a full church and glorious weather.

"Cuddington has no shortage of community-minded, caring people.

"We could not give an award to every deserving member so we recognised three members in particular - Joyce Nicholas, Ken Robinson and Dan Doherty."

Mrs Nicholas received her award "for her significant contribution to local and district scouting over many years" - a dedication which saw her awarded the Scouts Silver Acorn last year by the Duchess of Cambridge at Windsor.

The Citizen of the Year award went to Mr Robinson for his "significant contribution to the Cuddington community".

He worked for many years organising the ticket sales, promotion and fundraising for the Kensington Philharmonic Orchestra.

In his retirement, he has been a member of the Probus Club of Ewell, as both president and speakers’ secretary, a longstanding member of St Mary’s Church, and a member and president of Cuddington RA, as part of which he organised its fun days for many years.

Epsom councillor Judith Glover said: "Ken has supported the community of Cuddington for over 50 years quietly, professionally, with passion and caring and always a gentleman.

"He is a very worthy recipient of this new award."

PC Dan Doherty received an award for his "commitment above and beyond the call of duty over the duration of his role as beat officer".
