A Morrisons store will be coming to Weybridge after councillors approved the supermarket giant’s amended plans on Tuesday evening.

Plans for the supermarket at the former Focus DIY store in Monument Hill were refused by the west area planning sub-committee in October last year.

A new design was unveiled in March and the plans were submitted to Elmbridge Council in April.

The new plans saw the supermarket pulled back from Monument Hill by six metres and an overall reduction in size of 7 per cent.

The approved plan also includes 220 parking spaces in an undercroft car park, unchanged from the initial application.

The store will be 6,019sqm, down from the initial 6,396sq m. The current site is 2,227sq m.

The previous application was refused due to its size, mass, scale and bulk being out of character with the local area, it had not been satisfactorily demonstrated that the parking provision was adequate for the proposed store and the due to the loss of a London Plane tree.

Speaking on behalf of the objectors, Simon Michaelides, a Baker Street resident, said: “We welcome the redevelopment of the site and we have nothing against Morrisons per say. We feel strongly that Morrisons has failed to strongly address the concerns.”

Surrey County Council, responsible for highways and transport, recommended refusal for the initial application and parking management included in the new application outlines that shoppers can only park for 90 minutes.

Speaking after the meeting, Richard Haynes, development executive for Morrisons, said: “Our proposal to invest in the town is a vote of confidence in the future of Weybridge. The store will transform an empty, derelict site into the latest generation Morrisons’ foodstore.

“It will deliver a new attractive entrance into Weybridge – something many people want to see – create 300 new job opportunities, boost footfall in the town centre and increase affordable food shopping choice for local people.

“These are all positives for Weybridge and am I looking forward to working with Elmbridge Council to finalise the outstanding details and moving a step closer to delivering the benefits of our scheme to the town.”
