Molesey Boat Club’s Moe Sbihi predicted disappointment for the men’s eight at the third and final Rowing World Cup regatta in Lucerne last weekend, and the Surbiton man was right.

After grabbing gold during a difficult weekend at Eton Dorney at the second regatta last month, Sbihi said a similar result would be impossible in Switzerland when the crews from Germany and the USA returned to the competition.

And so it proved as GB finished fourth behind the returning crews, and the Netherlands.

After beating Russia to gold at Eton Dorney, Sbihi, in the Great Britain boat with club-mate Andrew Triggs Hodge, said: “To be honest we’ll have to up our game because with the level we’re at, we won’t win in Lucerne.”

Great Britain’s performance director, David Tanner, admitted: “We knew medals would be hard to come by here, but now we know what work we need to do.”

There was also continued frustration for Molesey’s Ruth Walczak as she finished fourth in the lightweight women’s single scull, for the third consecutive World Cup regatta.

Attention now turns to the World Championships in Chungju, South Korea, starting on August 25.

Meanwhile, Molesey rowers Fiona Schlesinger and Ed Williams have been included in Great Britain squad for the U23 World Championships in Linz, Austria later this month.

Schlesinger, from New Malden, is part of the women’s eight and Williams will row in the men’s coxed four.
