Skateboard and BMX lovers will be excited to learn that a new £170,000 skatepark and bike track is be built in King George's Park.

Construction of the new leisure facility, on the Southfields/Wandsworth border, began last week and should be completed by the end of summer.

Once finished young people will be able to enjoy a new state-of-the-art BMX, scooter and skateboard course complete with banks, ramps, jumps grindrails, handrails and flyoffs.

The £170,000 investment, funded by Wandsworth Council, is part of a wider £550,000 programme to improve the borough's playgrounds.

Councillor Kathy Tracey, the council's children's services spokeswoman, said: "This promises to be a really fantastic new leisure facility for young people of all ages in Wandsworth.

"Skateboarding, BMX biking and riding and doing tricks on scooters is now massively popular among children and teenagers."

Further plans for the park could include the vacant play building being converted into a youth cafe or a venue for skateboarding classes run by professional tutors.
