Olympic rowing legend Greg Searle returned to his old stamping ground for a reunion of Hampton Boat Club’s all-conquering 1988 men’s eights crew.

Searle, a former Hampton School pupil, was at the club’s 2013 regatta last week to cheer on the current eights team to the semi-finals of the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup.

The reunion marked 25 years since the 41-year-old, who won Olympic gold in 1992, and the squad won the triple crown of Schools' Head, the National Schools Regatta and Henley Royal Regatta.

Searle is not the only one from the 1988 squad to find success – brother Johnny won gold in the Barcelona Olympics, and Rupert Obholzer joined the Searle brothers in the coxless four at the Atlanta Olympics to win bronze in 1996.

Organiser Nick Horne said: “Getting back together was quite emotional. It felt like we'd just taken a few weeks off and were back in training again.

“We were also at Henley supporting the current Hampton first VIII, who put in a fantastic effort reaching the semi-final and should be proud.”
