Wandsworth Council are urging people to look out for their neighbours during the heatwave.

The council and GPs have been working together to protect vulnerable people in the high temperatures.

A level three heatwave warning has been issued by the Met Office, with the hot weather set to last another week.

Very young and older people, those with long term illnesses and other vulnerable people could be in danger.

Social workers and housing staff are working with people living in social housing to make sure they are safe.

They are also keeping an eye on users of the council's Watch and Telecare Services and vulnerable residents.

This includes giving advice on how to stay cool on home visits, over the phone and on the online Adult Care Information Service.

Children's centres and day centres are also receiving advice on how to keep youngsters safe in the heat.

Special information is being distributed to Muslim people through mosques and community leaders, especially as it is Ramadan when many observe fasting.

Wandsworth Clinical Commissioning Group has sent out information to all GPs and practise nurses, while isolated older people are being contacted to make sure they are safe.

Houda Al-Sharifi, director of public health, said: "While it’s lovely that most of us are enjoying the heat and the sunshine, the high temperatures during the night can be a danger for some of us – especially those over 75 living on their own and people with chronic and long-term illnesses.

"We are doing all we can to help, and we would urge everyone to make sure all members of the community are getting the help and advice they need to stay safe."
