A candidate to go up against Carshalton and Wallington MP Tom Brake has been selected and says he is looking forward to campaigning.

Matthew Maxwell-Scott has been selected to represent the Conservative Party for the Carshalton and Wallington Ward. He will go up against Liberal Democrat MP Tom Brake at the next election, likely to be held in  May 2015.

Mr Maxwell-Scott, 36, lives in Wandsworth but is looking to move to the constituency with his pregnant wife and son as soon as he can.

He said: "We'll be moving as soon as we can. It's great for us as wanted to move to the area as it's the best area's in London for families. We're really excited about it.

"I got put on the parliamentary list and this was the only seat I wanted to apply for. You don't have to live somewhere to represent it well but it does give you a huge advantage.

"I'm planing to do a lot of campaigning. I've got a long track record as a campaigner, I campaigned for [Sutton Greater London Assembly member]Steve O'Connell in Carshalton and Wallington and for Boris and we got a good vote there.

"It showed me that hard work pays off and that people in the area do have Conservative values and support the party.

"One of the advantages of it being a long time until the election is that it gives me the chance to find out what people's concerns are. I know people are worried about standards of living, the economy, that there are jobs for their children and they're worried about house prices. That's why they need this Conservative Government to continue the recovery.

"I know in Carshalton and Wallington public services are important and you can't possibly look at the area without being hugely concerned about St Helier Hospital. I'll fight to make sure it's not just saved but looked after to be as good as it can be."

Mr Maxwell-Scott said he also wants to be a strong voice in Parliament to make sure national policies suit the area as well as possible.

He is a keen cricket fan and walker and said one of the things that attracted him to the borough is the greenery and the River Wandle as he is a member of a charity which looks after the river.
