A student teacher who overcame a brain tumour as a child took part in the British 10km for charity Headsmart.

Emma Bassett from Twickenham and her friend Laura Thomson from Newcastle were among 25,000 runners on Sunday, July 21.

The pair ran to raise funds for the Brain Tumour Charity’s HeadSmart: Be brain tumour aware campaign.

HeadSmart was the brainchild of the Brain Tumour Charity, the Children’s Brain Tumour Research Centre at the University of Nottingham and the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health.

It was created after concern among health professionals and parents about the length of time it was taking to diagnose brain tumours in children and young people, thus delaying treatment.

Ms Bassett, who is a HeadSmart community champion for the Brain Tumour Charity said: “The atmosphere is phenomenal and I’d encourage anyone who is thinking about it to run for the Brain Tumour Charity.

“It’s such a little known cause, but so many people are affected by brain tumours and the work The Charity is doing to fight the disease is amazing. It was an incredibly hot day, but the crowd kept me going and I smiled all the way round.”
