A group of parents are leading the way to keeping their homes smoke free.

The parents, whose children attend Eastwood Nursery School Centre, in Aubyn Square, Roehampton, have taken Wandsworth Council’s Smokefree Homes Pledg.

The pledge means children in their homes will not be subjected to second hand cigarette smoke.

Eastwood Nursery School Centre has the most pledges so far with 78 homes now smoke free.

For the past year Wandsworth Council has been working with children’s centres across Wandsworth to encourage parents to take the pledge.

Three mums, Deborah Foot, Nicola Brinsley and Wendy Peddar, have also trained to become parent champions and support other people taking the pledge.

A new on-site stop smoking drop-in clinic is now based at the centre, staffed by the council’s stop smoking team and a parent champion.

Plans are in place to create other outreach clinics across Roehampton.

Councillor Jim Maddan, the council's cabinet member for health, said: “This project typifies the work that Eastwood has been doing here in Roehampton to make people’s lives better.

“This is giving people the opportunity to give up smoking and improve the health of their family.”

Director of public health for Wandsworth, Houda Al-Sharifi, said: “We know that passive smoking is harmful to children.

“It’s great if mums and dads give up cigarettes, but pledging to go smoke free is even better, because it means nobody will be smoking around your children in their own home.”
