Maintenance work due to start today on Goat’s House Bridge, South Norwood, has been postponed until next Monday.

Preliminary work by Network Rail to strengthen the Penge Road Bridge was due to begin today, but has been delayed until August 5, while work to fix a burst water main in Portland Road continues.

Emergency repairs have been underway to repair a 7inch main which burst yesterday morning.

A spokeswoman for Thames Water confirmed the broken pipe had been fixed on Wednesday evening and said one lane in Portland Road would reopen this morning.

She added: “The other lane will remain closed until the weekend, while we carry out repairs to the carriageway.

"Network Rail have agreed to delay their works on Goat House Bridge, Penge Road until our work has been completed.

"We are very sorry for any disruption this may cause.”

The work to Goat’s House Bridge- which dates back to the early 1850s- will increase the bridge’s weight limit to include buses and heavy vehicles.

The main project is getting under way in November and will be completed in February 2014.
