A council has made a u-turn on its plan to cut £3,500 from the budget of a charity that helps elderly people.

In December Reigate and Banstead Council decided to cut funding for Age Concern Banstead from £18,500 to £15,000 amid reservations over major changes to its trustees.

But last month the council decided to reinstate the full funding because concerns about the leadership of the charity had been addressed and it has expanded its reach.

Age Concern Banstead trustee Sally Pulsford said: "It was a great disappointment when they cut it because we have to work very hard on fundraising to provide services and expand our services.

"Now we have got the extra money we are very pleased."

The charity's website said: "This increase, together with all the fundraising that we have been doing and our increased membership, means that we should break even this year.

"This is a fantastic achievement as we have significantly increased the services that we offer."
