Plans for a new park on the Falcon Estate in Battersea have been submitted to Wandsworth Council.

Proposals have been drawn up to spruce up the underused piece of grassland on the estate to create a green oasis for local residents.

The spot, which could be named Falcon Glade, could undergo extensive landscaping and also benefit from the planting of new shrubs and wildflowers.

A number of steps would be taken to promote greater biodiversity including the use of log piles, bird boxes and insect boxes to encourage other wildlife.

The proposals have been drawn up by the council’s parks and housing departments following consultation with local residents and businesses and these have now been submitted to the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, for funding under his ‘Pocket Parks’ initiative.

If the Mayor backs the scheme he could provide up to half the £40,000 cost of the scheme, with the council funding the remainder.

The site is on the corner of Falcon Road and Falcon Terrace and is bordered by a railway bridge to the south and the housing estate to the north.

The council’s environment spokesman Councillor Jonathan Cook said: "At the moment it rather dark and unwelcoming. Local people refer to it as a dead area and that is what we want to change."
