A former community centre has been torn down to make way for a temporary car park.

The Wimbledon Community Association (WCA), who ran the Sir Cyril Black community centre in St George’s Road in Wimbledon, closed in 2012 after it was unable to keep up with the costs of maintaining the post war building.

In June Merton Council threw the group a lifeline by buying the WCA's stake in the building for £816,000 allowing them to begin looking for new premises.

The location of any potential sites for the WCA have not yet been disclosed, however trustees have indicated it is likely to involve partnering with an existing organisation.

Demolition of the post war building in Worple Road is currently underway with the site set to become a temporary 19-space car park until May 2016.

The 0.06 hectare site has been earmarked for future re-development with the council suggesting in a site and policies document that it should comprise a "mix of community, business and residential" uses with an alternative option listed as a hotel.
