The campaign to have the streets outside Clapham Junction rightly named as Battersea has gained momentum with the arrival of new bins.

Bins labelled as Battersea appeared in St John's Hill, Battersea, last Thursday.

The area is regularly confused as Clapham Junction or Clapham because of the station, but is actually in the SW11 postcode area.

A campaign has been running since 2005 to get businesses in the area to switch to Battersea, instead of labelling themselves as Clapham.

The bins previously only bore the Wandsworth Council logo and message.

Philip Beddows, chairman of We Love Battersea, said: "They are great, we want more. I had no idea they were arriving, they came out of nowhere.

"It will help massively, we want them everywhere in the area.

"I think these bins are fantastic - it says what it does on the bin."

The council has installed the bins in a bid to make the town centre more pedestrian friendly.

Councillor Russell King, cabinet member for transport, said: "Bins and other street furniture are being replaced as part of the council's town centre improvement project.

"This includes remodelling the St John's Hill / Lavender Hill junction, widening pavements, installing a new diagonal crossing and relaying pavements."

Previous triumphs for the campaign include encouraging Google Maps to label the area Battersea and designating it as Battersea town centre.
