An elderly man has died after he was accidentally run over with his own car.

Colin Fitzgerald, 72, of Thornton Heath, parked his car in Spurgeon Road on Thursday, August 1, near the junction with Beulah Hill in Upper Norwood.

It is believed while he got back into his car it started to move and trapped him underneath.

He died in hospital three days later.

Police said two other cars were damaged but no other drivers were involved.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said both the London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service attended the scene and the 72-year-old was taken to Kings College Hospital with chest injuries.

Dr Roy Palmer opened and adjourned the case at Croydon Coroner's Court on Thursday.

Dr Palmer said: "He had an accident with his own car. It rolled down the hill and ran him over causing him injuries."

He added the cause of death was traumatic injuries to Mr Fitzgerald’s chest. The case was adjourned for four months.

Upper Norwood councillor Pat Ryan said: "It is so devastating that Colin Fitzgerald has lost his life in such circumstances, and my sympathy and support goes out to his family at this very sad time."

Officers from the Metropolitan Police’s Road Death Investigation Unit based at Catford are investigating the incident. There have been no arrests.
