Sixty "barking mad terriers" took part in the Omni Terrier Derby races at the weekend.

The annual event at Epsom Downs Racecourse on Sunday saw the dogs compete in up to 16 heats in an attempt to follow in the footsteps of equine racing champions Shergar, Mill Reef and Nijinsky; all legendary Derby winners that have raced on the famous Epsom turf.

Your Local Guardian:

This year's victor was Plummer Terrier Magnus, owned by Kieran Daniels and described by Bob Pain of event sponsors Omni Colour, as "Epsom’s brown and white delight".

Mr Pain described the atmosphere as "absolutely brilliant!".

He said: "Although it would appear as though 60 barking mad terriers would be a recipe for disaster, the event was a smash hit, and it was great fun for the family."

Your Local Guardian:

More than 350 competitors and spectators turned out to watch the 11th Omni Terrier Derby.

Next came the best turned out dog competition with the prizes of unique hats created by milliner Jessica Connelly.

Your Local Guardian:

The ladies fascinator was won by Hebee, a Welsh Terrier owned by Lana Gadser, and the boys top hat was won by Shamas, a Norfolk Terrier.

The competition was judged by Anna Webb from the BBC Radio London programme - Barking Blondes who support the Omni Terrier Derby.

Together with a raffle, barbecue, a "name the monkey" draw organised by Farm Fencing and additional sponsorship from McGee's, SCG Flooring and Floorsite, the derby raised nearly £1000 for Epsom Racing Staff Welfare and canine charities.
