Giant workhorses and a sheep dog herding geese are just two of the attractions at a countryside day in September.

Children can try on medieval helmets, train for battle and learn about weapons such as longbows at the family event in Banstead Woods.

Banstead Countryside Day showcases hurdle and charcoal making and visitors can have a go at spinning and making their own pots.

Other kids’ activities include a nature trail, tractor-pulled trailer rides, traditional swing boats and craft making while adults can browse a wide range of stalls featuring produce, local groups and wildlife.

Diamond Riding Centre for disabled riders are coming to the show this year and The Downlands Project will bring along their sheep and explain the benefits of conservation grazing.

The Working Horse Trust will display their gentle giants and re-enactment group Arriere Ban will give children a ‘fun and gory’ insight into medieval history.

Farmer Mark, from local Shabden Park Farm, is also set to show off his sheepdog and geese.

The Downlands Project is organising the day in partnership with its charitable arm The Downlands Trust and Reigate and Banstead Council. The annual event celebrates the countryside as well as its history, community and rural crafts.
