The borough's two MPs were divided on the possibility of taking military action in Syria.
In last night's vote in the House of Commons, MP for Carshalton and Wallington Tom Brake voted in favour of military action in the war torn country if it was backed up by evidence from United Nations weapons inspectors who are investigating whether the Syrian government used chemical weapons.
Both MPs asked constituents for their views before the vote.
Paul Burstow, MP for Sutton and Cheam, voted for and against the motion, making his vote a technical abstention.
He said: "I remain unconvinced that intervention would help diplomatic relations or ensure long term stability.
"I also needed to be persuaded of the value of any military intervention.
My problem with any UK/US military action is that it will not deter the Assad regime from further use of chemical weapons, will result in further loss of innocent lives and is likely to make things even worse."
Tom Brake, MP for Carshallton and Wallington, said: "I am an internationalist and the use of chemical weapons is a war crime.
"We must use the international bodies that uphold international law – or else we have nothing.
"Furthermore, I am not persuaded that the sort of military intervention proposed - that of surgical strikes - would have made things better rather than worse."
