A building society has stepped up to help a Sutton charity collect food for people in crisis.

The Sutton branch of Yorkshire Building Society has become a collection centre for Sutton Food Bank.

It means people will be able to take non-perishable food items to the High Street building society and they will be sent on to the charity.

Staff at Yorkshire Building Society kicked off the initiative by making donations themselves and customers have also already started to make donations.

Sue Suggit, manager of the Sutton branch of Yorkshire Building Society, said: "The Food Bank approached us as they are desperately seeking locations that can act as a collection point.

"The charity told us that they have doubled the amount of people they have helped on this time last year so we were determined to try and encourage as many people as possible to make a donation.

"We were amazed at how quickly the boxes filled up and the number of people that came in wanting to make their contribution.

"There were also quite a few people who were surprised to learn about the need for a food bank in our local area."

Sutton Food Bank distributes non-perishable food to people who are in crisis and cannot otherwise get a meal.
