A four car pile-up caused rush hour congestion in Ewell yesterday evening.

The crash at around 5.30pm happened outside a petrol station at a roundabout on the Ewell Bypass which connects to Reigate Road in Ewell.

An Epsom fire station spokeswoman said a dark blue Mercedes was written-off but three other cars only suffered minor damage.

She said: "There was debris everywhere. We had to tidy that up and it caused a massive traffic problem."

She said the car occupants escaped without apparent injuries, adding: "People are usually quite quiet because they are shocked and stunned."

Numerous ambulances and police cars were called to the scene as a precaution because the crash occurred at the entrance to a petrol station.
