A driver started their car this morning only to discover a cat had got itself caught in the fan belt of the engine.

Firefighters were called to Gainsborough Court, in Ewell, at 7.30am and the car owner gave them permission to cut the fan belt to released the terrified moggy.

The cat’s owner arrived on the scene and took the cat to the vets. The RSPCA were called but arrived after the cat was freed.

A Surrey Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "The cat had climbed inside the engine compartment and somehow managed to gets its paw caught up in the fan belt."

He said: "When it’s cold in the evening cats can climb into car engine compartments because it’s warm. This does happen occasionally."

A RSPCA spokeswoman said: "The fire brigade rescued the kitten and told the owner to take it to the vets."
