A mother is demanding better security at her block of flats after her life became blighted by drug addicts.

Maria Moon, of Sutton Court, in Brighton Road, said she feels she is being hounded by a gang of drug users who leave needles, foil, and wraps of substances outside her nine-year-old daughter’s bedroom window.

There is no CCTV at the block and no secure entrance to the flats, giving users what Miss Moon believes is an unmonitored and sheltered drug den.

As a private tenant, she has asked her landlord to enquire about getting CCTV, but she says he cannot make Sutton Housing Partnership (SHP), which owns the building, do anything and claims she is being held to ransom by the housing association.

She said: “There is easy access into the flats, which, if it comes to it, all it would take is someone to knock on your front door, see that no one is home and kick your door in.

“We need secure entry door systems in place – regardless of the money.”

The Cheam nursery school teacher said: “Of the block of six flats, there is myself, two of the other flats are privately owned and three are council tenants.

“My family don’t really like coming round any more.

“There are seven children under 10 living in this block and it’s just not fair on them.

“The hardest part is having to explain to my daughter why she must always wear shoes outside, and why people are out there taking drugs.

“It is not a conversation I want to have with her, she should not be exposed to it.”

Conservative ward Councillor Tony Shields said: “Residents of Sutton Court deserve to be able to come and go from their homes without fear of what they may find on the other side of the front door.

“I will work with any and every agency police and council to drive drugs out of Sutton Court.”

A police spokesman said: “We have spoken to all those involved, we know who they are, and they have all been told to leave and not return.

“We are continuing to work closely with Sutton Housing Partnership to see what else can be done including the installation of CCTV.

“Most residents at Sutton Court have told us this is no longer a problem.”
