In his weekly message Darren Williams, Merton’s Borough Commander, said: "As I sit at my desk to write this week’s message I had intended a really positive upbeat message about our proactive operation yesterday.
"Instead I find it hard to know what to say when one of our colleagues, PC Andy Duncan from Traffic is currently fighting for his life in hospital after being run over in Sutton last night.
"Andy has suffered extensive major injuries including a broken neck and is currently in theatre. We can only hope and pray he comes through.
