A memorial to killed traffic officer PC Andrew Duncan could be installed at the spot where he was knocked down by a car last week.

Sutton Council leader Councillor Ruth Dombey said it would consider the move if the tragic officer's family sees it as appropriate.

Married dad-of-two PC Duncan, a traffic officer based in Merton and who lived in East Molesey, was knocked down as he tried to flag down a car during a traffic operation in Reigate Avenue in the early hours of Friday morning.

The driver left him in the road about 35 metres from where the collision happened. He was treated at St George's Hospital in Tooting for injuries including a broken neck but died in hospital on Sunday.

The idea of installing a permanent monument to him in Reigate Avenue was raised at a Sutton Council meeting on Monday evening.

The bouquet from Sutton police

Coun Peter Geiringer said: "Sometimes when a policeman is killed they have a memorial at the spot where it happened. I wonder if this is something we might consider?"

Coun Dombey responded: "We're in contact with the family and we'll respect the wishes of the family on this. We'll do whatever is appropriate."

Sutton Mayor Coun Sean Brennan has written to PC Duncan's family expressing the council's condolences. Sutton police has also sent a large bouquet.

PC Duncan's wife Claire released a tribute to her husband earlier today. She said: "We would like to thank all the medical staff at St George's hospital, Tooting, for their enormous efforts in attempting to save Andrew's life.

"We have had, and still are having tremendous support from all Andrew's colleagues, family and friends. Our children, Adam, Emma, and myself are truly grateful.

"Andrew was a fantastic husband, father, son and brother. This is supported by the many tributes which we are still receiving from his family and friends.

"We are left with a huge void in our lives, but we have some fantastic memories that we will always treasure."
