More than £2.5m is being spent to prepare Surrey for severe winter weather, Surrey County Council has announced.
The winter service plan was approved at a meeting of Surrey County Council’s cabinet on Tuesday, September 24.
Under the plans, the money will be spent on 39 gritters fitted with salt spreading monitors and location trackers, six weather stations for real-time updates and more than 1,800 salt bins across Surrey will be filled by October.
Money will also be put toward extending a trial of other vehicles like quad bikes in the council’s winter clear up and having a team of farmers on standby for when extra support is needed.
John Furey, Surrey County Council’s cabinet member for transport, highways and environment, said: “We prepared well last year and have repeated that preparation this year.”
An extra £5m will also be spent repairing the 200 roads across Surrey most in need of repair due to cold weather damage.
