Community groups have been given grants totalling almost £50,000 by the council.

Sutton Council has announced its latest round of community fund grants with a range of charities and groups, including a women's centre, a disabled charity and a church receiving funding boosts between £808 and £10,000.

The money in the fund is provided by Sutton Council and is distributed through the Sutton Centre for the Voluntary Sector through a panel of council, business and a volunteer representatives.

Among the charities and groups to get funding boosts are Surrey Clubs for Young people, which was given £10,000, children's charity Jigsaw4U, which got £6,785, and the Women's Centre Sutton, which got £8575.

Pamela Byfield, Jigsaw4U's director of operations, said: "We are very grateful for the money. The young person we have employed will gain valuable experience and it will help us to provide an even better service.

"We work with young people experiencing things such as sexual exploitation, bereavement and grief. Children’s voices can be overlooked – we make sure they are heard."

The other charities to receive grants are: RACE, Clockhouse Community Association, Oaks Way Centre, Sutton Mencap, Roundabout and Horizon Church Sutton.

Councillor Simon Wales, Sutton Council's lead member for the voluntary sector, said: "These groups are all a tremendous asset to the borough and it is a real privilege that we are able to support them in the work they do."
