Angry drivers have been told mysterious double-yellow lines which appeared overnight last Friday are valid and they could be penalised for parking on them.
Residents in Mount Road, Chessington, were told yesterday by councillors they had nothing to fear from the appearance of the lines.
But a letter from Kingston Council officer Gareth Thomas contradicted that advice, saying the lines will be enforced today and tomorrow while building deliveries to the Four Oaks hostel take place.
He wrote: “I apologise that the works to lay the yellow lines was carried out so late at night without any warning.
“The work was planned at this time to avoid parking from the industrial estate, which we are aware intrudes into the access route.
“The deliveries commence [on Tuesday, October 1] and I would be grateful if you could ensure that no vehicles are parked on the access road.
“This will allow the operation to be completed as quickly [sic] so that the yellow lines can be removed as soon as possible.
“Please note, these yellow lines are valid and will be enforced if the delivery vehicles are obstructed.”
The lines will be removed once deliveries have finished, he said.
Resident Marc Rendall said on Facebook: “Seems excessive to paint yellow lines for two days only though.
“I love the fact it was done at night to avoid parking from the industrial estate and without showing any thought or consideration for the residents.”
Andrea Tucker added: “Cones would have surely been cheaper if nothing else. You couldn't make it up could you.”
