A 91-year-old woman became suspicious of a man after he used a dirty rag to touch things in her house.

The woman allowed the smartly dressed man inside her home, in Queenswood Avenue, Wallington, yesterday after he claimed to be a security specialist from Merton Council wanting to check her windows and doors.

The man left the front door open when he entered her home and the woman thought she heard someone on the stairs.

She soon became suspicious when he used a dirty rag when touching surfaces in the house and refused to show her his identification.

The man left saying his identification was in his car outside and drove off towards Plough Lane.

The woman phoned Merton Council but she was told she comes under Sutton Council.

She found her cupboards and drawers upstairs had been searched but it is not known, at this stage, if anything has been taken.

The incident happened just after 1.15pm One of the men is described as being aged 40-45, 5ft 6in tall, with black hair and wearing a grey suit and white shirt.

The other is described as being 30-35 years old and wearing a dark suit. Their car is described as a black saloon.
