A butcher has complained after Transport for London (TfL) dug a trench across the road outside his shop – at the end of a long-overrunning spell of roadworks.
Steve McManus, who runs Surrey Premier Meats in Hook Parade, said: “They decided to dig the trench across the entrance to our service road during the night on Friday preventing any customers from gaining access to the parade, and then left it closed off until around 2.30pm on Saturday which is usually our busiest trading day.
“They were only working on it for around an hour.
“They wiped out yet another days trading for me at a real cost of around £1,000.
“It feels like they are using bully boy tactics.”
A TfL spokesman said: “As part of the final works on Hook Parade, our contractor began work to repair a section of carriageway after trading hours on Friday, at the entrance to the service road on the east side of Hook Parade.
“This work should have involved simply relaying a thin piece of surfacing, however upon arrival a much deeper repair than originally anticipated was deemed required.
“As a result, the service road unfortunately had to be kept closed overnight until early Saturday afternoon until the repair could be carried out.
“These works are now completed and we apologise for any inconvenience this caused to local residents and businesses.”
