Derek Osbourne's former Liberal Democrat colleague, Kingston and Surbiton MP Edward Davey says his actions were 'appalling'.

Former Kingston Council leader Mr Osbourne faces prison after yesterday admitting possessing and distributing more than 5,000 indecent images of children.

Mr Davey said: "[The] revelations in court are even more appalling than what we learnt when he was charged.

"Our sympathies are with the victims of this child abuse who now deserve to see justice done.

"For the council itself, it was right he was expelled as the leader immediately and good that the council has moved on under the new leadership of Liz Green."

Zac Goldsmith, MP for Richmond Park and north Kingston, said: "This revolting man ran every aspect of Kingston Council for years. He deserves the longest possible sentence."

Police have said Osbourne's crimes did not relate to his role at the council.
