A campaign has launched to list a pub as a community asset after it was sold to developers.

The Trafalgar Arms, in Tooting High Street, Tooting, was sold to Wellbeck Developments for £1.3m in July.

A group of pub lovers have formed a community group and have applied to Wandsworth Council to list the venue as a community asset.

If granted, the group would have the power to put in a bid for the pub if plans are put forward to develop it.

Before it was sold the pub had lain vacant for almost a month.

It is rumoured the venue, which has been operating as a pub since 1923, will be developed into flats.

Chris White, chairman of the campaign, said: "It was tremendously sad to see this historic pub bought by property developer and then immediately closed after so many decades of providing. a valuable community service.

"We suspect that in due course a plan will be submitted by Welbeck Developments to demolish the pub and convert the site into flats, but this would be a real loss to the locals and community groups who used The Trafalgar Arms.

"By applying for a Community Asset listing as a first pub protection measure we hope to ensure that any future plans for the site include the retention of the pub."

Earlier this year The Wheatsheaf, in Tooting High Road, was the first pub in Tooting to get listed as a community asset.
