Disabled children are to get more support from Sutton Council, it has been pledged.
Members of the Sutton’s Health and Wellbeing Board agreed at their October meeting to sign up to the Disabled Children’s Charter for Health and Wellbeing Boards – committing the authority to meet the charter’s aims to help disabled children.
The charter has been set up by campaign group Every Disabled Child Matters and outlines commitments the borough will make to help improve the lives of disabled children.
Councillor Ruth Dombey, leader of Sutton Council, said: "Signing this charter shows Sutton’s continued commitment to improving the lives and opportunities of young disabled people within the borough.
"Every disabled child really does matter and we want Sutton to be seen as a place where young people can be the best they can be. I look forward to working with the campaigners and making sure Sutton meets its commitments."
Two years ago Every Disabled Child Matters invited Local Authorities to sign a Disabled Children’s Charter. They are now inviting Health and Wellbeing Boards to sign up to a Disabled Children’s Charter for Health and Wellbeing Boards. To date 15 have signed up.
Sutton’s disabled children’s service are overseen by the Sutton Disability Partnership for Children and Young People.
The Partnership brings together local authority and health agencies, alongside voluntary sector organisations and groups representing parents and carers, and children and young people.
