A councillor has apologised for branding a motorcyclist hurt in road crash a “twit”.
Yesterday we reported a collision between a motorbike and a car in Ewell Road on Sunday afternoon.
Sutton councillor Mary Burstow (pictured) said she had been informed by the police the biker had been racing another motorcyclist when the collision occurred.
But the rider’s companions who witnessed the incident said they were not racing and the car driver did not indicate her intentions to do a U-turn in the road.
The motorcyclist’s companion Sharon Dixon, 49, said: “[The rider] had absolutely no idea what her intentions were and stood no chance of avoiding the collision.
“We all know that many drivers these days have no regard for other road users; least of all motorbikes or cyclists.
“They drive using their phones, texting and calling, putting on their make-up and God knows what else.
"Mary Burstow is totally out of order for making assumptive criticism of a motorcyclist she did not see riding when the accident happened.
“I could understand her comments if she actually saw the accident and had the facts, but she did not witness it."
Coun Burstow, who represents Cheam ward and is the wife of Sutton and Cheam MP Paul Burstow, said: “My comment was made in good faith, based on what I had been told on the day.
“I apologise for the offence which has been caused and I am pleased the motorcyclist is recovering."
