Like us, residents in the wards we represent desperately want to see an improved and more prosperous Morden town centre.

Conservative councillors believe Morden should and could be a place where local people and visitors alike want to stop and use the shops and amenities rather than simply passing through on their way to catch a bus or tube.

This was the vision championed by Councillor David Williams following the ‘moreMorden’ consultation undertaken by the previous Conservative administration in 2008.

Unfortunately, the town centre’s potential isn’t currently being fulfilled.

As local ward councillors, we have been working hard since 2010 to press the Labour-run council to deliver the improvements that we would all like to see.

In June this year a delegation of Conservative councillors, together with local London Assembly Member Richard Tracey, went to City Hall to lobby Transport for London (TfL) for assistance in enhancing our local town centre since TfL is a major landowner in Morden.

We are therefore pleased that a masterplan for the area between Morden tube station and Sainsbury’s is now being developed in conjunction with TfL.

It is long overdue. Hopefully redevelopment of the station site will kick start the long awaited regeneration of the wider town centre, and particularly the high street.

What is vital however is that the people who live nearby and actually use the town centre have their say on the future of Morden.

That’s why we are encouraging as many residents as possible to respond to the consultation at www.merton.gov.uk/moremorden before the deadline of Monday 11th November 2013.
